Research Summary
Research shows that many women experience faster muscle loss during the menopause transition compared to earlier in life. This age-related muscle decline, often called sarcopenia, can affect strength, mobility, and overall health. Studies suggest that ensuring adequate daily protein intake, along with regular resistance training, may help preserve muscle and support healthy body composition.*
Whey protein has been studied in postmenopausal women and appears to be particularly effective when combined with strength training. A systematic review and meta-analysis found that whey protein supplementation improved lean muscle mass and body composition compared to placebo. Other studies also highlight the importance of consuming at least 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight daily, with some experts recommending 1.0–1.2 g/kg for older adults to better support muscle health.*
